2025 Oct – Mining 1 category PDF, record no. 110 – from Richard Smith – The descriptions of the first and second chimneys (called flues in the record) should be referred to as the second and third chimneys. The second chimney is the large structure which is visible today and has the odd entry from the west side and the exit to the north, towards the cutting and the mine level. The third chimney is on the ridge of Reeth High Moor. There was a first chimney, shown on the 1st edn. OS map. It was roughly halfway between the second chimney and the road. I have located this as a square foundation but it’s difficult to find (Smith R. and Lamb R., 2000, ‘Smelt Mills of the Yorkshire Dales – Surrender Smelt Mill Flues and the Wilson & French Condenser’, British Mining, 67, 5-25, 2000). It may have been used to get the mill working early when it was first built in 1841.
