When, in late 2011, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) planned to build a new target range close to existing firing ranges on Bellerby Moor, SWAAG was invited to undertake a landscape survey of the proposed site, with a view to the MoD minimising the impact of the construction on the known archaeological features.
After an initial walk-over on the site, the tight time-scale and limited access required only designated SWAAG members to do the formal survey, but another day was organised for more members to view the site and the wider landscape. Resulting from the survey, a selective archaeological dig was undertaken by Wessex Archaeology. The knowledge and analysis presented below represents the results of all four phases of the examination of the site, beginning with the 14-page survey report here: Bellerby Moor GPS Earthwork Survey, by Tim Laurie and Stephen Eastmead, January 2012.
