Who We Are

Swaledale and Arkengarthdale Archaeology Group (SWAAG) is an organisation of enthusiasts who contribute to the knowledge-base of the history of the northernmost Yorkshire dales through a broad range of disciplines including the study of archaeology, geology, botany, and recorded history.

We have studied and reported on a wide range of archaeological sites from the prehistoric to Romano-British and medieval settlements as well as studying the industrial archaeology of old lead-mine workings. We attempt to link the historic built landscape with the human history of the two dales in a way which is academically rigorous and informative. In addition to traditional archaeological pursuits, we have also studied and recorded the flora and ancient woodlands of the dales, and we have transcribed historic manuscripts. All our important findings are freely available on our web site in various forms including searchable data.

We have formed good relationships with the two local schools. Volunteers from SWAAG have managed outreach activities of curriculum enrichment through which we aim to encourage children’s interest in archaeology and the local historic environment.  See especially here: Learning and here Hagg Farm Project.

All our activities are organised and managed by SWAAG volunteers, although for certain events, such as excavations, we do engage professional supervisors. Our wide-ranging programme includes information-led walks, site field-walks, talks by members and guest speakers, and seminars, as well as opportunities to learn and engage in landscape and geophysical surveying, mapping, drawing, sketching, photography, desk-top research, archaeological excavations, recording and analysing finds, and producing reports.

Most of our activities are open to all, so please come along to see if you would like to join us. If you are interested in joining SWAAG, please contact us at info@swaag.org, or complete and return the membership form to be found on the Join Us page of this website.
