How Hill, Downholme

A view from high moorland in low sunlight looking down on a grass-covered hill, with ditch and bank earthworks at the summit. In the distance are hills and dales as far as the eye can see.
The large Iron Age hillfort of How Hill at Downholme.

This large Iron Age univallate (single bank and ditch) fort, on an isolated hill east of Downholme village, was apparently built to control access to upper Swaledale, having sight through a break in the hills to the south, in which runs the route to the Vale of York.
